Book Club

Okay, Melissa and I think we should have a book club! Yay! We'll try reading one book, and if it works out well, we can read more! Melissa thinks we should have a book picked by Sunday, and then have a week to read it before we discuss it a week from Monday (via the blog). Then we can discuss for a week, and then pick another book by the next Sunday. Melissa doesn't care that sometimes people are too busy to find a copy of and read a book in a week, but if you disagree with her, we could probably lengthen the reading time. Also, no one participating can already have read the chosen book (or started to read it either). I think this will end up being a Holly/Melissa/Shannon thing, but if Mom or Emily (or anybody else) wants to participate, that's fine too. Here are the books that we are considering for reading next week (Mar 27 to April 2):

X The Sound and the Fury (by William Faulkner)
My Name is Asher Lev (by Chaim Potok)
X House of Seven Gables (by Nathaniel Hawthorne)
The African Queen (by C.S. Forester)
X Things Fall Apart (by Chinua Achebe)
Room With a View (by E. M. Forster)
The Lovely Bones (by Alice Sebold)
Thank You, Jeeves (by P.G. Wodehouse)
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (by Malcolm Gladwell)

If you have already read any of these, or have suggestions about which one we should read, feel free to post a comment. I will be making the final decision (at least this week), but I really have no idea which one to pick. Let me know what you think or if you have suggestions on how to make this work.

I nominate Wodehouse or Sebold.

I've already read the 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

I would probably need at least two weeks. I'm already doing two monthly book clubs, so...

Two weeks would be fine by me, Shannon, but you'll have to convince Melissa. (See, she has no life, so she has nothing better to do with her time)

I can't be blamed for being such a good reader.

Mean Mommy said...

Um, yes you can.

ahem. said...

Yeah, she's got a point.

Martin said...

But can you do this?

Mean Mommy said...

That only works if we can see you. Wanna pop up on my shoulder for a minute?

ahem. said...

You can do that, Melissa? That's creepy! Don't ever do it to me...

You can all pop up for me any time! So let me know what book we are reading. Since I have no life either being trapped here with the loonies!

Okay, well I pick Thank You, Jeeves simply because I've wanted to read it for a while.

Some background for the book: P.G. Wodehouse wrote several short stories about the adventures of Jeeves and Wooster (somewhat similar to the Dr. Holmes series... I think). Thank You Jeeves is the first full length novel he wrote in the Jeeves series. I hope it's not too confusing... I could barely understand the summary of the book.

I hope Mom and Shannon won't have too much trouble finding it; it seems the Pima County Library only has audio versions of the book available. If it's going to be a problem, I suppose we could read The Lovely Bones instead. Please let us know soon whether you are able to get a hold of a copy of Thank You, Jeeves, so that we may plan accordingly. (Of course, you could just listen to the audio version if you wish.)

I don't care, I guess. It seems like cheating to listen to a book for a book club, but if that's the one you want...

"tyrannical relatives, beastly acquaintances, demon children, and literary fatheads..."

Wait...is this book about our family?

Okay.... I've changed my mind. We're reading The Lovely Bones because Shannon is being a baby. It's sort of dark and/or depressing, but it should make for an interesting read. You can start reading as soon as you can get a hold of it. Our discussion thread will probably start on April 10 or so. Also, we'll be using this reading guide to help our discussion/analysis: http://www.readinggroupguides.com/guides3/lovely_bones1.asp
Once you finish reading, you might want to look over the suggested topics/questions. I wouldn't look before, because it might spoil the book for you. Anyway. Happy reading!

Ga Ga goo goo...I'm a helpless baby, not a spy.

I have both books already. So I will start with The Lovely Bones. If we want to move on to the other one just let me know and I can let Shannon borrow my copy when I finish.

I checked The Lovely Bones out from the library this morning. I'll get started soon.

Okay. So I'm done with the book. I'm waiting to hear what the rest of you all think.

Summer reading, schmeding. Nobody does that stuff. If Melissa or Shannon claim they did... just remember they were dorks in high school.

Mean Mommy said...

I didn't do any summer reading...at least, nothing on their list.

Martin said...

Yeah. I had my own lists to get through before I could start on any stupid school lists.

True, true.
